Networking and making contacts

It's worth putting time in to explore the work area you're interested in by talking to people who work in the field.  As well as finding out more about particular jobs you're interested in, building networks can develop a lot of important skills and help you to feel more confident about how you present yourself.

Take the initiative by contacting specific employers, checking for names in directories and advertisements and attending local events. This will increase your knowledge of the city and your  travel-to-work area.

Here's some networking advice from Monster Hotjobs to get you started.  Join Linked In and consider how other forms of social networking might help (provided you're careful what you say and remember that your digital footprint will always be there!).
