Foundation degrees have been designed and are delivered with the help of employers, so they develop the knowledge and skills that employers want. They are described as vocational qualifications because of their focus on work and employability. Most Foundation degrees include work based learning opportunities to prepare students for the workplace.

Go to our section on Financial help for study for the latest information. From September 2012 part-time students can apply for student loans provided they are studying the equivalent of at least a half of a full-time course each year.
The employer pays the apprentice a wage and gives the apprentice on-the-job training which allows the apprentice to achieve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). The apprentice also spends time with a learning organisation, gaining key skills that'll be useful in the job market - like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. In addition, the apprentice studies for a technical certificate, a recognised qualification which gives further knowledge and understanding of the apprentice's job. See our page on apprenticeships.
