About Foundation degrees, HNCs and HNDs
Foundation degrees, HNCs and HNDs are work related qualifications. Foundation degrees are innovative because they are designed and delivered in partnership with employers to equip people with the relevant knowledge and skills for business. If you're already in work, a foundation degree will give you the skills you need to develop. If you're moving on from full-time education, a foundation degree (which usually takes two years full-time) could be the perfect kick start to your career.
There are also Foundation Diplomas, which have replaced some HNCs - these offer the opportunity to study at the same level as a Foundation Degree, covering half the number of modules in each year. Foundation Diplomas usually take 2 years part-time.
So, if you thought a degree was going to take at least three years out of your working life, think again. There's variety in the way you can study, including part-time, online, in work, from home ... all these choices mean you can earn and learn at the same time.
You don't have to have A levels to do a foundation degree - there are a number of pathways. Check the individual course descriptions for entry requirements, to find out the exact cost and see whether you are eligible for Financial help. The maximum tuition fees will be £3,290 for the 2010/11 academic year. For more information, download our information sheet on
Foundation Degrees.
Many providers also offer opportunities to top up your Foundation Degree to an Honours Degree. Ask about these when you register.
Topping up your Foundation degree with the Open University
Successfully completed Foundation degree study can give you credit towards many Open University qualifications, including the University's Open Degree. This means you can complete an honours degree part-time and either choose subjects relevant to your Foundation degree, or simply add courses that are of interest. You can do this at anytime after the completion of your initial award.
